School Lane, High Laver, CM5

This historic building was constructed in 1862 on land donated by Anna Maria Meyer to serve as the local parish village school. Its unique history ties directly to the Reverend William Webb Ellis, famously credited with inventing rugby football in 1823 when he picked up the ball and ran with it while a student at Rugby School.
Before moving to the countryside parish of Magdalen Laver in 1855, Webb Ellis served as the chaplain of St Georges Chapel on Albemarle Street in London. When he set out to build the new village school for his Essex parish, he heavily utilized his connection to his affluent former London congregation. They provided the voluntary contributions and funding needed to make the school a reality. Though the school eventually closed its doors in the mid-20th century, the building was later converted into a spacious and charming residential property.
